چکیده

• The observation that hypoxia causes an elevation of pulmonary arterial pressure probably secondary to pulmonary vasoconstriction led von Euler and Liljestrand to suggest that local pulmonary hypoxia might play a role in controlling the distribution of pulmonary blood flow. One method of studying this proposed mechanism in man has been to induce unilateral hypoxia by means of a bronchospirometry catheter. Fishman et al. gave 10% oxygen in nitrogen to one lung and failed to find a response. However, Himmelstein et al. found approximately a 40% decrease in pulmonary blood flow to the hypoxic lung in three out of five subjects when 5% oxygen was administered. A fourth subject had an increased pulmonary artery pressure but no change in the partition of the pulmonary blood flow. The results on the fifth subject were inconclusive. In contrast, Defares et a!. found approximately a 44% decrease in blood flow to the lung breathing 10% oxygen in 10 normal subjects. Fishman' has reviewed the studies of unilateral hypoxia in man and concludes that the bulk of evidence suggests an increased resistance to perfusion on the hypoxic side probably secondary to ipsilateral vasoconstriction. Cautious interpretation of the experimental findings has been necessary since conclusions regarding pulmonary vasoconstriction have been based on the finding of an increase in pulmonary vascular resistance or a greater

EFFECTS OF HYPOXIC HYPOXIA AND CARBON MONOXIDE-INDUCED HYPOXIA ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM AND REGIONAL BLOOD FLOW OF THE ANESTHETIZED CAT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential responses of the cardiovascular system and regional blood flow to hypoxic hypoxia (BB) and to carbon monoxide (CO)-induced hypoxia (COH). Ten anesthetized cats were studied under two nonnoxic (control: CONT) and two hypoxic conditions. Four types of radioactive micro spheres were used to measure regional blood flow during CONT an...

Micropuncture measurement of microvascular pressures in isolated lamb lungs during hypoxia.

To study the effect of alveolar hypoxia on the pulmonary circulation of the newborn, we determined the longitudinal distribution of vascular pressures and the distribution of blood flow in isolated blood perfused lungs of newborn lambs during normoxia and hypoxia. We also examined the effect of hypoxia on the slope and intercept of the vascular pressure-flow (P/Q) relation. In 14 lungs, we used...

Regional Pulmonary Blood Flow

unteers were studied, nine sitting and seven supine. During hypoxia there was a slight but significant increase in relative perfusion of the upper portions of the lungs in both the sitting and supine subjects. During recovery from hypoxia, blood flow distribution differed significantly from the control. The erect subjects showed increased relative perfusion of the lung bases and the supine subj...

Effect of thoracic epidural blockade on hypoxia-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension in rats

Objective(s): The present study was aimed to investigate the influence of thoracic epidural blockade on hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension in rats. Materials and Methods: Forty eight Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups, named normoxia hypoxia hypoxia/ ropivacaine and hypoxia/saline. Animals were placed in a hypoxia chamber and instrumented with epidural catheters at the t...
